In short:Â
- The optimal temperature is 20-25°C (growth can be very slow below 20°C).
- Harvest regularly to stimulate new growth.
- You can refill water and nutrients whenever you want to.
- Make sure all plants get enough light.
- Remember to keep the light approx. 10 cm above the plants.
Â
Tip 1: The optimal temperature is 20-25°C (growth can be very slow below 20°C)
Temperature is very important for plant growth, and the optimal range for most plants is 20-25°C.
If it drops below 20°C, the growth can slow down significantly – plants don’t like to freeze.
Â
Tip 2: Harvest regularly to stimulate new growth
Herbs and salads are ready for harvesting within 4-7 weeks, depending on the temperature.
Most herbs are trimmed from the top down. For the best results, make cuts just above the nodes where new leaves grow out:
Cut straight above the nodes and new leaves will get light and grow out.
Â
A good rule of thumb: Wait until your plants are 10-15 cm / 4-6 inches tall before harvesting. There’s no harm in waiting longer.
A 2nd good rule of thumb: Harvest max ⅓ of the plant at a time. However, as long as you don’t cut the entire plant, they usually grow back nicely.
Â
Tip 3: You can refill water and nutrients whenever you want to
You don’t have to wait until it’s empty before refilling. For example, you can top up before going on holiday.
When doing a partial refill (e.g. 1 liter), adjust nutrients proportionally: 6 and 3 pumps per full tank = 2 and 1 pumps per liter.
Â
Tip 4: Make sure all plants get enough light
Plants grow best in direct exposure to light. If larger, fast-growing plants overshadow smaller plants, consider trimming the large ones to distribute the light evenly.
Â
Tip 5: Remember to keep the light bar approx. 10 cm (4 inches) above the plants
Â
Plants reach for light, and if the light is too far up, they’ll grow tall and thin (if it’s too close, they might get burned).
It doesn’t have to be exactly 10 cm, but that’s a good rule of thumb 😊
